Ritual Hockey - Athlete: John Jackson

John's Ritual

My pre-game ritual has varied from tournament to tournament, year by year, to the point where I have more or less got it perfected. Beetroot shot; brush teeth; factor 50 on the nose; wear full match kit to game (excluding shinguards); take one stick (even if the spare is in a team-mates bag); re-tape grip. I have no idea if it helps my actual performance but gives me some peace of mind.

    Notes from the field

Most people call me Jacko or JJ, but have heard some Lord of the Ring references from the stands. Currently, I play at Reading HC, England and I am working as Director of Hockey at Marlborough College. Originally, I am from Northern Ireland, and I first started played hockey as a 4 year old at Mossley HC. Since then I have played for Loughborough Students (England; 2004-2010), and Braxgata HC (Belgium; 2010-2013). I made my Irish senior international debut in July 2006 and have gone on to amass 200 caps to date; with the aim of more to follow, on even bigger stages.
